This restaurant will transport you to California. I came for taco tuesday, which is SUPER busy and lunch a few times when it wasn't so busy. Everytime I've been the service has been less than mediocre. The last time I went which was a few days ago, the waitress barely came to the table and the food took forever to come out. We ordered the chicken avocado rolls for an app which were not fried enough but were delicious anyway. I ordered the steak salad which I asked to be medium rare to which the waitress asked the kitchen if it was possible (it was), but came out without a hint of pink. The steak was still flavorful and extremely tender so I couldn't complain. The dressing was very good but made the salad a bit heavy. Bottom line, I think the food is good and the restaurant itself is fun but the service isn't great. I would come here for lunch when it's less busy and expect to be here a while unless you get a better waiter than I've gotten.

Delicious! I came with the fam and we got quite a few things. Our large group was seated immediately and we were served chips and salsa. The chips were very salty but still tasty. I had a regular margarita which was great except the rim was lined with regular salt, not the typical salt used for tequila. It was a little too much. I also had the white fish tacos and the tuna tacos. I preferred the white fish tacos but everyone at the table raved about the tuna. There was a whole lotta tuna in there and the flavors were unique especially for tacos. The fish tasted very fresh. We ended with the cookie dough flautas which were unbelievable. Basically cookie dough in a fried shell topped with chocolate and whipped cream. What could be bad about that?

Excellent spot for take out tacos. Calling ahead is best. Dining is is ok. Seating a little tight otherwise it gets a 5. Jamaican jerk chicken tacos are amazing. Steak is quality meat. There is a burger on the menu, but why even bother. The Mexican food is where it's at. Def worth the experience.

I am never ever disappointed here. The sangria (both red & white) is delicious (though I'm still not convinced if there's actually any alcohol in there). I order the upside down nachos to start and some shrimp tacos, and life makes sense again.

Wow was really good place. The staff is all young but very professional and attentive. Had steak fajitas, were awesome. Place is small and was packed so sat at the bar, although right next to the register so was pretty busy but I did not want to wait a half hour. Will try and get back next month after the specials change.

Came here on Taco Tuesday. We didn't have to wait too long, it took 10-15 minutes to be seated. They give tortillas with guac once you're seated. Their guac was alright, tortilla chips were stale. I ordered a filet mignon taco & a grilled chicken taco. The steak was seasoned great but the consistency was tough.. Definitely not how a filet should be. Chicken taco was good though. Not sure if I'd come back here.

I recently just discovered this place and I can honestly say I love it. The staff is always super attentive and friendly, they greet you right at the door and make you feel extremely welcomed. I asked if they could turn down the AC and close the blinds and they were on top of every request right away. The food is always good and they run a different special every day of the week so it's a perfect place if you're on a budget. My personal favorites are $5.95 burrito's & margaritas on Mondays and Taco Tuesday! When you go, I definitely recommend trying to cilantro ranch dressing on anything you order and the fried cookie dough dessert with chocolate sauce! (I forget what it's actually called) Overall, I can't think of anything I don't love about this restaurant..

This place is fun and lively. Food is good also. Kids love it and prices are great. Definitley a good place for a big family with lots of kids. Very cool decor also.

LOVE THE TACOS!! A friend of my moms requested us to go here and it was so good! I had the fish tacos as a meal and upside down nachos as a starter omg! It was heaven! Def my new place for tex mex food!

A different spin on Mexican food. I know it's California coastal... I know. But it's pretty much a Mexican food joint with American flair. The California surfer vibe and atmosphere work well and allow people to come in and relax. The food and drinks keep them coming back. Last time I was there with a decent sized group and we had a little bit of everything. It all tasted good and fresh.I enjoyed my sunburned burrito while my lady enjoyed her tacos. The entire group left happy and full. Recommendations: try the roast pork quesadilla, the naked taco bowl and the the white sangria.

I've given this place a bunch of chances, but they almost always miss the mark. I frequently take out tacos on Tuesdays. Regularly, something is missing from order. (Has happened 3 times so far.) The tacos are okay at best. Flavors work well together but they're always slopped together. The ingredients are never balanced. The problem was last Tuesday. I ordered 6 tacos for takeout. I was excited they had two new ones on the menu! The ahi tuna and the jerk chicken. I was dying to try the jerk chicken taco. The sweet plantains won me over! But, I am allergic to cilantro. And there is a cilantro lime aioli. So, I politely asked if they could omit the aioli due to my allergy. I know they have a policy for no substitutions on specials but this was for an allergy. The girl on the phone hesitated and then finally said she'd ask the manager. The girl comes back to the phone and says "we'll do you a favor this time, but don't bother ordering it next time because they won't help you out." Ummm, last time I checked, if someone states an allergy, you're legally responsible to accommodate that person. I really have a serious issue with the attitude I was given over my allergy. If that wasn't bad enough, they put my taco in with the others with the aioli. I could have had a terrible reaction. $2 is a really good deal, but if they disregard allergies and a rude while doing it, they don't really need my business.

LOVE!! You can not go wrong Taco Tuesdays - every single one is delicious! Highly recommend the jerk chicken & plantains one though. Sangria is also a favorite. Awesome, friendly staff & fast service make this one of my go to spots :-)

Take out Date: September 9, 2014 I heard good things about this place so I was really excited when hubby was coming here for a business dinner and offered to bring me something home. I asked for a vegetarian burrito. I have to say when hubby bought it back home and I ate it I wasn't all that crazy about it. I was expecting your classic burrito with black beans, lettuce, avocado...you know the Mexican fare I'm used to. Instead it was full of rice, pinto beans, possibly zucchini and other kinds of vegetables and to me that's not really Mexican. Hubby liked it, he said the place was really cute, the staff was friendly and the service was quick, plus he said he felt you get a lot of bang for your buck here. I really want to give this place another chance, if I go back with him and try it again and feel differently I'll up my review to 4 or 5 stars. All I can say for now is stay away from the vegetarian burrito if you're like me and you expect one with black beans, rice, lettuce, avocado etc. Visit Date: September 20, 2014 So after being disappointed in their take out burrito I came here with hubby and brother in law to eat. I had their cheese quesadilla, guacamole and salsa for dinner. The quesadilla was pretty good I think if you come here and want traditional mexican I would advise you to stick to items without the beans. The gaucamole had a different taste than usual guac but it was good, it tasted fresher to me. The salsa and chips were slamming. So it's still 3 stars to me but I like my second visit here better than the first time I had take out. I wouldn't say they are my favorite but they're alright.

Went here on taco Tuesday with my girlfriend. The filet mignon tacos were amazing and so were the chicken tacos. Only thing I wasn't fond of was the guac. Im a big fan of guac and for some reason it just tasted fake to me. It tasted like it came pre made and was almost hard for me to eat. Other then that everything was great friendly service, good drinks, and great tacos. Check this place out if you haven't already

  • Lauren L.

This place was interesting. The atmosphere was great, kinda like a Ron Jon shop, but the food wasn't that impressive. The weekly specials are pretty reasonable, but not a whole lotta food to go around. I'm not a fan of tilapia and that's the only fish taco they had. It's a cute place for a drink and a quick taco, but if you're really hungry, I wouldn't say this is your ideal spot.

    (3)

A must try you, will not be dissapointed with anything on the menu food/drinks! Check it out I'm from the area and frequent it almost weekly. Cool atomosphere and staff and crowd too

I've been eyeing this place for a while and finally decided to give it a try. My group and I went on a Sunday, which apparently is the day that kids eat free, so there were crayons rolling around everywhere and awkward looks from babies in high chairs at every corner. I really liked the decor. Very...should I say....surf-y? I got the whole California vibe which was pretty cool. There isn't a lot of seating, so beware if you're going to check this out on the weekend. Our wait time wasn't bad, though. It took about 15min for us to be seated. Before we ordered, we were greeted with some hot, crunchy salsa chips with some not so crazy salsa. Kept us satisfied while we looked over the menu. But the menu! It was so cute. They were these mini orange surfboards. So creative. I loved it :) I ordered 3 West Coast Fish Tacos which were absolutely awesome. The fish tasted pretty fresh and the chipotle cheese complimented it very well. My sister had the Crispy Fish Burrito which she said tasted really good. One of my friends had a regular Cheese and Chicken quesadilla which hardly had any cheese in it and tasted very plain. However, my other friend had the BBQ Chicken quesadilla with extra cheese which she enjoyed. I believe her only complaint was that the extra BBQ sauce drizzled on the top was not needed. Overall, everyone enjoyed their meals and were completely satisfied. I will definitely be visiting Zim Zari again! I wish I stepped foot in here sooner. The atmosphere is welcoming, the staff is super friendly, the prices are reasonable, and the food is really good. I can't wait to explore the menu some more :)

For appetizer, we split the guacamole with chips. The chips were very crispy yet salty. The guac and the salsa were both good. For main course, I had the shrimp fajitas. They were very overpriced at $15. The shrimps were tiny. The tortillas were poorly factory made one. The pico de gallo was mild. The caramelized vegetables were decent. There just wasn't any significant flavor contributor. The atmosphere was very annoying. There were so many families with children. Crying children. Yelling parents. I was completely put-off by the combination of a family friendly restaurant with a bar. It's like Mexican-cuisine Applebee's.

  • Jenna O.

I will never eat here again nor recommend this place to anyone EVER. I got the shrimp tacos and they were so bad that I was questioning what I was even eating. The shrimp wasn't even remotely fresh and were over cooked to the point where I felt like I was just eating the skin on the outside- no meat in them what so ever. It only got worse from there. Absolute rip off. I threw out my food it was that bad: no one could pay me to eat here again

This is a fun restaurant. I really enjoy the surfer theme. The food is ok to good. The emphasis is pacific rim foods, so think Asia to California. The tacos are baja style. I prefer authentic Mexican tacos to what is served here, but at least you aren't expecting anything authentic when you come here. The prices are on the cheap side so that's a plus. They get packed on the weekends, so be prepared to wait if you come late. 3.75 stars to be exact.

    (4)
  • Blair G.

I love this place. The chips and salsa they bring out are tasty and the tacos are delicious. My favorites are the BBQ chicken salad and the shrimp tacos. If you love tacos on a Tuesday this is the place. Their drinks are on the weaker side so if you are going there to get tipsy this may not be your place.

Want to reiterate Seth B.'s review: this is not a Mexican restaurant, it is definitely Southern California inspired. Been here over ten times over the past couple of years, and Zim Zari's record is still unblemished. I reserve 5-star reviews for a combination of great service, unique ambiance and, of course, delicious food. Has all the necessary bases covered, and has covered them without a misstep over a long track record. Says something in my book. Staff is always friendly, accommodating and on-point. The owner is active and provides great presence and management. Makes sure his staff is being supported and addresses customers with respect. He evidently values their time and business. Cool little West Coast surfer theme throughout: surfboard on the walls, deeper pastel colors that pop, nice wooden feature items. Menus are even on little wooden surf boards. Sometimes its those little things that make a restaurant really stand out among the available options. Food? Go with the tacos. Just a little FYI: they have a Taco Tuesday special among other daily deals-- think Monday is 5-dollar margaritas. Anyway, the tacos. All of them are fantastic. Personal favorites are the volcano shrimp, tuna, and fried white fish (very lightly fried, super crispy on the outside, falls apart on the inside). All of them have a nice blend between heat, citrus and cooling flavors (mostly avocado to take the edge off). Power move: go with a couple of friends, have everyone order a different taco entree (make sure to add that third taco), exchange, win.

Really good California style taco place. The price is a little steep for tacos but the quality is good. I usually stick with the tuna wasabi blt tacos and have never been disappointed. The tuna is perfect and rare with seated outside. The wasabi sauce is amazing and so is the seaweed that comes in it. Get fries instead of that little container of sauce. Everything I have tried there has been good and certain days a week they have specials. I usually get takeout so do not know how he service is.

Came for taco Tuesday. Waited a bit to sit but as soon as we were seated the service was fast. I ordered two chicken tacos and the filet taco. My favorite was the filet with steak and fried onions. Perfection! I will come again!

We went in tonight with a big group for a birthday celebration. They took forever to seat us even though we called ahead as they requested. The restaurant was SUPER loud, but the food and vibe was good. We had a nice time overall. The waitress was nice and my Shrimp Volcano tacos were good, though the side of beans and rice was bland. I liked the salsa and the food as well. Not bad, I'd go back =)

First, this is mislabeled; it's not Mexican food, its Southern Californian food. Not sure why it took me so long to review this place as its one of my favorites. I go maybe once a month for lunch. Great atmosphere, service and, food. I usually get the fish tacos, or the volcanic shrimp tacos, but everything is good. - Oh, and the chips and salsa they give to start are fantastic, I can eat two baskets myself if I wanted to. . .

Just had lunch with my sisters - catching up with each other, noticed the staff was rushing us! Each coming over cleaning something else off our table, or staring at our table... Finally I asked our server if they needed our table or something.. She had said yes! People were waiting.. Found that to be so rude. We were having a nice lunch on a beautiful Sunday. Ordered lots of food! And they were so rude and dismissive and rushing. Will never go back again! And food wasn't that great. There are better restaurants w much better service

  • Christina W.

I love this place. The service is usually really friendly and the food is consistently good. My favorites are the pork and fish tacos. They have specials on certain days of the week (like Taco Tuesday) but be prepared to wait for a table. Oh and they start everyone with chips and salsa, which is a nice touch.

    (4)
  • Joseph F.

Just left taco Tuesday had the tuna, fish, and surf and turf taco s, all were excellent. I especially like the tuna, it is good quality tuna on a three dollar taco. Took a little longer then usual to get my tacos, so my meal was on the house. A place that cares about their customers.

Just an FYI- this is NOT a Mexican restaurant. Came in here on New Years Day with my husband. I've heard good things so I wanted to see for myself. We were seated very quickly (only 5 other tables full) and our server Brittany was really very nice. We were given chips and salsa to munch while we waited. The chips were a little salty but the salsa was very good. I ordered a raspberry iced tea which was really really sweet despite the menu saying it was freshly brewed, also it was $3.19 wtf. Anyhow, we ordered some recommended dishes...appetizers chicken wings and a chicken and avocado sun roll. My husband said the wings were "whatever" and I thought the chicken roll needed a bit more flavor as it was pretty bland. We changed our main order up after they told us they didn't have pork left for the Pacific Pork tacos. No prob it is a holiday after all- we ordered the BBQ chicken burrito and the filet mignon tacos with one extra jerk chicken taco with a side order of rice and beans. Overall, the food left a lot to be desired. It was really bland which made us both wonder what was happening to our blood pressure which felt on the rise after we finished our food. Our bill was around $62 after tip. We really thought the service was good, but just don't think we will return based on the quality of the food.

Zim Zari - the Californian coastal grill that reeks of mediocre franchise soon as you step foot in the door. The burrito tasted as expected; almost as if it were crafted somewhere between a Friendly's and Taco Bell, which isn't necessarily bad lol The prices justify the ends though. You get a sizable portion for roughly six or seven bucks and unlimited tortilla chips to help satiate yourself. Would I come back? Maybe now and then. Recommended: BBQ steak burrito

One of my friends did a review of the joint and i kept it on the radar.I had a chance to go and was looking forward to it. If it wasn't taco Tuesday i would have probably had a burrito or maybe a salad or maybe a bowl.Everything on the menu looked good.On Tuesday the special is 2$ tacos for the basic ones then 2.50 for i think fish.then i think 3$ for the filet one. The food was great only thing with the special u don't get rice and beans. I look forward to my next return, only problem is its around the block from smoking al's. 2 different things but coming from queens or hicksville is rough.

We've been going to this place for a few years now, and it never, ever disappoints. Its always clean, the service is good and OH YEAH, the food is really quit excellent. There is a definite and intended "California" vibe here, as if you were on a cool surfers beach, and this was some little grass hut with the most awesome fish tacos and beer around. Its that type of joint. We've had quite a few different meals here, and todays Baja Chicken Burrito was, as always, right on the money. FRESH, tasty, and with a side of slaw or their excellent regular or sweet potato fries, just the thing to cure a Saturday night hangover. The soba noodle bowls are top notch as are the burgers. The fish tacos are really tasty, and the volcano shrimp tacos rule! And if you feel like starting a fresh hangover, the margaritas are phenomenal. Really there isn't anything negative I can say about Zim Zari. I wouldn't necessarily go there for a 4 course meal, but if you want to chill out, have some really fresh, good-for-you type of food and wash it down with some good adult beverages, its a good choice. Kids are welcome, lest you get the idea that its a grown up place. Plenty of choices for the little ones, and on Sundays they eat FREE! Not bad! So, once you finish up catching some waves at whatever Long Island beach you would do so at, and give this place a try. You likely wont be disappointed.

Had a great Tuesday night taco night here last night. Everything was great. Nick our server was great helpful and funny too! Can't give 5 stars like I wanted to because the buffalo cauliflower while quite delicious was a bit skimpy for the price. Other than that no problems. Can't wait to go back!

For a first time, this place isn't bad at all. I liked the food. As a starter we got chicken tenders (don't recall the name) which wereI had volcano shrimp tacos, they were very delicious, and very well presented. My friend had baja chicken burrito and he enjoyed every bite of it. My waiter Janine was very friendly and sweet. Enjoyed her service. :)! Thank you for making our first time enjoyable.

Yum yum yum! My husband and I looooove tacos (especially on taco Tuesday) and have heard some great things about zim zari! The tacos were AMAZING! The chips and salsa they give you are good - the salsa is great, but the chips a little too oily. But that didn't even matter because these tacos are so good. The volcano taco was definitely a favorite. But we also go the surf and turf, jerk chicken, and ahi tuna as well - all were so good! Staff was friendly and received prompt and attentive service. Loved that at the end of the meal what seemed to be a manager or owner came to the table to see how everything was. Overall great experience, and I can be picky having been in the service industry for a while! Can't wait til next Tuesday :)

  • Brittany D.

It was okay, not the biggest fan of the service though. I didn't hate any of the food but I wouldn't kill to return either. Better Mexican out there and I'd rather pay a little more for the service. But I even enjoy going to Taco Joes over here for a great salad

I love this place! The first time I went here, I ordered a Napa bowl, it was good, but I'm not into the spice! For people who like/can handle spice, get the orange chicken Napa bowl. The second time I went to Zim Zari's for dinner, I had the buffalo chicken egg rolls for an appetizer! Delicious! For my meal, I chose the filet mignon tacos, they were great! It was a small portion and probably wouldn't satisfy me as much if I didn't have an appetizer. Instead of two mini tortilla tacos, maybe three? Lastly, for dessert I had the fried icecream, I enjoyed it! Overall, my two experiences have been pretty good and I would go back. My group had a short wait time, friendly service, and great food.

I had the jerk chicken tacos and loved them! The sweet cooked apple made the dish for me! Service was friendly and efficient. Highly recommended for Cali style mex!

Great atmosphere and food deals. Did Taco Tuesday (2$ tacos) almost every week last year with my best friend. Get here before the dinner rush though. Gets pretty crowded.

I think the way to explain this place is just OKAY... now some might not say that about their drinks... i am aware they have a great reputation for their Sangria flavors. However the chips... and the tacos we had were just all okay. Chips were not even as good as something i can get at the store... same goes for the bad salsa. I got the volcano tacos which apparently is their big item. I loved the idea of the tacos... the shrimp with avocado and such. However the tacos came to me cold and flavorless. The shrimp came right out of a bag, or so it tasted and it was TINY! The wrap it came in tasted like it came from shop right and was cold. There was just nothing really special about it. Props on creativity via decoration and interested menu choices.

Came back here recently and I am still super impressed with Zim Zari. This small surfer/mexi-cali place gives off a fresh and welcoming vibe. They have ridiculously reasonable food and drinks. I got the filet mignon tacos which were really really good. The steak was tender/juicy and came with crispy lettuce and crispy onion strings. My friend had the fish tacos which she said were good as well. I like the complimentary chips and salsa (pretty much bottomless) and the basket of various hot sauces. I love my food super spicy so that was a big plus. They have a lot of specials throughout the week from drinks to $2 taco night. It's a really fun place to go to after work or with some friends. Drinks + tacos? Sounds like a fun night to me!

What a difference going for dinner vs. lunch! As others have mentioned, dinnertime is full of families with loud children and large groups of teenage girls. Tonight we were told our wait (for 2 people) would be 20 min, then ended up waiting 45. Once we were seated, we waited another 10 min for a server. We were approached by a manager who nicely took our appetizer off the bill. The food was good and their sangria is great, but I am not likely to return for dinner due to the subpar service and chaotic environment.

The waitress was very friendly and very attentive. Our drinks and chips were refilled promptly. I ordered the filet mignon tacos. They were nothing to brag about. Perhaps your experience will differ. Three stars for the awesome staff, and two stars for the food.

Came here yesterday with a couple friends for lunch. I like the atmosphere of this restaurant, but every time I order something other than the crispy chicken napa bowl, I end up completely disappointed. Yesterday, I ordered the baja chicken burrito and it was totally bland and unseasoned. I couldn't bare to take more than 2 bites of it. The burrito was left untouched on my plate yet the waiter never asked me once if there was something wrong with my food. This is not the first time I have been disappointed with my food from zim zari, but it was definitely the worst. I will think twice before returning here again.

On the recommendations of a few friends, we gave Zim Zari a try hoping for some real deal California style fish tacos...not so much. The wait wasn't too bad and the space was decorated to feel surfer vibes. Jay, our server was nice and mindful. Now to the food: chicken and avocado sun rolls as an appetizer; doughy and tasteless. Its saving grace was a orange vinaigrette type dipping sauce, which I kept after we were done, just in case. I ordered fish tacos and my hubs ordered the jerk chicken tacos. They supposedly came with lime ginger rice(no flavor even for plain white rice) and what seemed like canned pinto beans. The tacos weren't very flavorful, either. No jerk on the jerk but liked the idea of sweet plantain and the fish was some flash frozen fried thing, chopped up with cabbage slaw, baja sauce and tomato. Very bland and unforgettable. I am glad to have saved the vinaigrette! Maybe that's why is is so cheap, but seriously, spike the prices to get some good ingredients or perhaps I just have to remember that this is Long Island- the land of bland. It always amazes me how some places are packed!!! I just don't get it, but will remind myself that there is always Chipotle!

What a cute little place to stumble upon on big old Italian Massapequa! This place is affordable and interesting. Sort of like tex-mex with a West Coast take. The best part about this place are the daily specials: Margarita Mondays, Taco Tuesdays, BOGO fajitas some other day & a pretty good happy hour. For any of those deals I think the value is spot on. The staff is young and playful. Atmosphere is laid back and the place is pretty small. You get chips and salsa with every meal. The burritos are pretty delicious (and large) and very different from your classic Chipotle. There fajitas are the same as most but with the option of lettuce wraps which is a nice healthy alternative other places should incorporate. Good selection of beers and their margaritas are quite delicious! Oh and yes their fried cookie dough dessert is pretty phenom! I think it is a definitely a must-check for those that live nearby!

Seating can be too close for comfort and it gets loud. A younger crowd tends to flock here because it is inexpensive. The coastal salad is fresh, all of their quesadillas are tasty, and their shrimp tacos are pretty good. I've ordered steak fajitas and tacos and each time the steak has been very chewy, so I stay away from any steak dishes. Chips and salsa are complimentary, and the salsa is nothing special. If you are looking for authentic Mexican food, Don Juan down the road is excellent.

Came here a few times for taco Tuesday and not a bad place. I have tried all the tacos and i think the best one would be the filet mignon taco. The drinks are very good especially the margaritas. Not an incredible place but a fun place to go out for food and drinks with friends.

  • Rob N.

Good, friendly service, but mediocre food. Chicken/avocado roll was chock full of onion and the chicken was on the dry side. The meat in the filet mignon taco was tender and had good flavor. However, if you've ever been to a taco stand in LA, you know that the salsa can really make or break a taco. Sadly, the salsa in the filet mignon taco was a strange tasting mixture of oil/garlic/tomato and not spicy at all. Honestly, you can't go wrong with $2 Taco Tuesdays. For any other night of the week, I wouldn't be in a rush to come back.

No. No. No. No. Decor- beachy & fun. Guacamole (7.50?) +1 and my Wau Wau Margarita..(pineapple, redbull drink..) and thats all. Get my order right the first time PLEASE (I ask for a chicken fajita with no peppers (13.99); They served me chicken fajitas with peppers) Strike 2 (they bring out steak fajitas) Strike 3..where the F are my tortillas? 10 minutes later and asking twice.. THEN I get it. Onions weren't fried enough and the chicken seemed slimey. Get your kitchen staff in order PLEASE. Dare I say.. I thought Chili's had BETTER quality food than this place?.. Yeah.. I said it. Do yourself a favor .. and go next door to Mercato.. now they have GREAT food.

Ordered drinks. They weren't even filled up. Got the upside down nachos. They were greasy and mainly sour cream with some cheese on top and like one small piece of avocado with one piece of tomato. Then had the shrimp quesadilla. Half the stuff that the menu said was in it was missing- onions, peppers, and scallions were MIA- barely any pineapple. Came with a scoop of sour cream. Most places would at least give pico de gallo. Very disappointing. Forgot to mention- wait staff talking with kitchen crew loudly about getting wasted and partying the night before. Not cute.

My Fiance and i typically go out to dinner Monday and Wednesdays and Zim Zari is one place we frequent. Mondays are my favorite because i love the Sunburned Steak Burrito. My fiance loves the fajitas, so he likes wednesdays (no longer buy one get one-which works better for us). not a big fan of the rice and beans, so we usually get a side of sauteed veggies - these are hit or miss. Appetizers - we LOVE the buffalo chicken egg rolls, usually stick to them. waitstaff is usually pretty good

No Complaints!!! Just went there for lunch with one of my fav's and had a great lunch. No wait,,,it was kids eat free day and i'll admit i was scared but it wasn't overrun with them thank god. We started it off with margaritas and i mean how bad could that be,,,she had the pineapple zimzari one and i had the mango both delicious. We shared the edamame and it said habanero sauce but i didn't find them hot at all they were tasty though,,,came with chili lime salt on the side. I had chicken fajitas and she had pineapple shrimp quesadillas. we both enjoyed our meals,,,didn't feel like disgusting slobs afterwards and were in and out in an hour. Def recommend it if you want fresh somewhat healthy not greasy Mexican food. I'll be back for taco tuesday,,,

Taco Tuesdays are a staple at my house. The filet mignon and surf and turf tacos are my favorite! The sangria is great here! My FAVORITE item on the menu are the citrus chicken strips!! The dipping sauce is ridiculous!

After over a year of wanting to try this place I finally went on Taco Tuesday. What a great deal. $2 for any taco. Be warned though, if you see on their menu that it would normally come with two, you will only get one. Appetizer me and my friend got the chicken and avocado sun roll. normally i'd be agains something like this, and want the nachos. but i'm glad we got it, it was surprisingly good, and the mango? chili dip it came with it, helped make it. we also got the roasted pork quesadilla. I'm a snob, and believe i've had some of the best quesadillas, but this was pretty damn good. the roasted pork was tasty, good amount of cheese. what bothers me is that most places will not heat up the shell prior to construction, and this can make all the difference, and as usual, the shell was just mediocre, but didnt effect the taste too much. As for the tacos, filet mignon taco, delicious, volcano shrimp taco, forgettable, tuna taco, very good, fish taco, good, pork taco, good. Honestly, if you're with 2-4 people, get at least 1 of all the tacos, and you'll find at least 1 of them that was delicious for your taste. Margaritas were pretty decent too. Overall, nice place, great service, good pricing, easily worth going to, and more then once if you can find tacos you like.

Okay, I went here taking the word of someone I know. It's "Taco Tuesday".. Tacos rang from 2-2.50... They have about 10 tacos to choose from.... I decided to go with Jerked Chicken & Surf and Turf... Everything is fresh! but the tacos are not that big, but the flavor is HUGE!!! All items in the taco compliment each other to the T.. The jerked chicken one comes with chicken, avocado, plantains, and a cool lime avocado sauce. 5 out of 5 stars! The surf and turf one comes with steak and shrimp spicy mayo and fried onions 3.5 out of 5 stars. The service was friendly and fast! The decor reminds me of a nice little spot you'd find in San Diego or Santa Cruz. Bright lights, palm tree wall paper, and surf boards.. Small seating area, and the tables are really close together.

Zim Zari is our go to taco joint. The atmosphere is fun and laid back, the staff is young yet efficient, the prices are very reasonable for the quality of food they serve and the menu is diverse enough to suit any appetite. Zim Zari has weeknight specials including $2 taco tuesdays, margarita mondays and buy one get one fajita wednesdays. One mark of a good restaurant is when you can order anything on the menu that you are in the mood for and be completely satisfied with what you get. No curveballs. You are in the mood for a fish burrito? You'll enjoy it. That's what keeps us coming back to Zim Zari. Everyone is always happy with their food and that provides for a great time. A couple other things: Zim Zari is a "california style" joint. Don't go in expecting chile rellenos and mole sauce, DO EXPECT fish tacos with cabbage and jack cheese... get it?... Great for groups, great appetizers (we just had buffalo chicken egg rolls, awesome!), great margaritas, several portion choices which can be effectively garnered from menu pricing (ie, the $13 enchiladas are a lot bigger than the $6 tacos etc etc) if you have never been to Zim Zari, go on in already!!!

ive been obsessed with this place for a few years now and i dont think ive ever had a bad experience. i drive a half hour to get there so although i dont go all the time i get so excited when i make plans to go. the food is always great and on point, everything is always super fresh. i describe it to friends as "texmex food with the freshest ingredients youve ever had, almost everything is $13 or less" i was just there a few nights ago and as always it was a great dinner.

I have enjoyed every meal I've had here from the salads to the burritos. The service is usually good. Even weeknights at dinner time are fairly busy. I ordered their catering for my job during the holidays and it won me some brownie points. They helped me bring the food to my car and wouldn't even accept a tip.

My family loves this place and it is so inexpensive that it will blow your mind! Start with the chicken wings in 3 different delicious sauces. The crispy fish burrito is incredible. The tacos, burritos and fajitas are all scrumptious.

I've been to Zim Zari on three seperate occasions over the last year. I was extremely impressed the first time, but each subsequent visit has left me less satisfied. On my most recent visit, we started with the free nachos and salsa. The salsa is great, with some heat and fresh herbs. The nachos are crunchy and fresh. Our appetizer was the upside-down nachos, which were a major disappointment. Picture a bowl of white cream with a little bit of avocado and tomato and cheese and some refried beans at the bottom -- but 90% creamy white grossness. I think it was sour cream -- we really couldnt tell. On top of this, they throw a ton of chips. You push away all the chips and dip them in the unappealing white cheese sauce. Fail. I got the chicken fajitas next. These were great. Lots of chicken, onions, and peppers. I went on fajita night, so the discounted price made these a bargain. Others at my table got the roasted pork quesadilla which no one liked, and the banzi burger which reportedly "tasted weird" but which I didn't try. On a previous visit, I had the Zim Zari Wrap, which I enjoyed because I like fruit with meat. If you don't like fruit with meat, take caution, because a lot of dishes have pineapple or mango in them. Don't get the "Zim Zari style" for an extra $1.95, as that seemed like a rip off for a little extra sauce/cheese. Service was acceptable, considering that service is not a strong suit of this restaurant. They employ a very, very young staff. Our waitress took too long to take our order (We had to call out to her to get her attention), but she brought drink refills over to us without us having to ask, which was appreciated. One thing I noticed is that she never told us her name and never smiled. Oh well. Overall, this place is okay. It's cheap, and I'd come here again with friends, but not everything on the menu is a success.

The Tacos and Nachos are great. The Margarito's are strong!! The chicken in my burrito was a little dry. The food is reasonably priced for a sit down restaurant. Some of the reviews I read said that the service was bad. I guess the management team also read those reviews because the service was excellent. The manager even came over to the table asked how everything was and bought my date and myself a round of drinks. I never had a buy back while sitting at the table in any restaurant ever. A lot better then most of the other Mexican style places in the area.

My wife and I were looking for a place to get lunch today. We had another place in mind but they only served until 2, and she had a midday appointment so we;d have been cutting it too close. So we went here instead and are glad we did. I had a special, "Ahi tuna BLT tacos" and she had some sort of salad. Both of these were outstanding, really nicely prepared and nice flavors, and a big pile of tuna pieces on my tacos. The room was comfortable and pleasant, and the service was great. Aside from doing what they were supposed to, we noticed the servers all seemed to be in a positive mood and walked around with smiles on their faces. Being beach lovers, we liked the surf motif and the music was nice. We definitely plan to go here again, frequently.

Taco Tuesday = The greatest day of all time. You get any taco for $2 here. These aren't your standard beef, cheese, lettuce tacos either. They have filet mignon, surf and turf, pulled pork among other fantastic ones. Their pork quesedilla (which had baked pineapples) was one of the best quesedillas I've ever had. Easily my favorite taco joint in Long Island.

  • Justin F.

Two words - Taco Tuesday. Go on Tuesday and only on Tuesday. Consume copious amounts (3 or 4) of their absolutely DELICIOUS $2 tacos. You'll thank me after. I tend to get 1 pulled pork, 1 filet mignon, and 2 fish. Yes, fish tacos. VERY GOOD fish tacos. I've had better, but only in Mexico itself. These come with some nice crispy fish, cabbage, red onion, and some sort of soft-crumbly fresh cheese. Simple and delicious. I tend to pair that with a nice glass of their red or white sangria (depending on their mood), but they have a decent selection of cocktails and bottled beers too. By far one of the best dinner deals on LI. Yum! Is it Tuesday yet?

Our waitress today was quite the poster child for the new breed of servers......... Middle aged, miserable people who can't do their job properly because they think it's "so beneath them". To me, if you have a paying job in this economy, BE GRATEFUL. At least TRY!!!! She came to our table and didn't say "hi, I'm blah blah blah, what can I get for you", but instead asked if we were ready to order. We asked if we could have a few more minutes and she walked away, slightly annoyed. Almost 15 minutes later (and 30 trips PASSED OUR TABLE) she reappeared. Continuing on my recent burger excursion, I ordered a Zim Zari burger, rare with avocado and chipotle mayo. I decided to get a side salad with spicy mango dressing instead of the veggie slaw. Thank god I did because the veggie slaw was totally meh. Our food came out and besides my girlfriend's wrap looking like it never saw a grill, everything looked up to par with my expectations. First thing I did i was take off the bun to make sure it was what I ordered and to actual little surprise, no chipotle mayo. Why was I not surprised you ask? While she was struggling to write down my huge order of a burger rare with avocado, I specifically asked if I could get that on the burger since it wasn't listed as a topping and I got a slight "yes" head shake. The burger wasn't horrible. I mean, I'd rather have tomato/onion slices and lettuce rather than a chopped mix on the bottom of the burger (because there's nothing like a soggy bottom bun). oh yeah and THE CHIPOTLE SAUCE WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE! Plus, they buttered the bun. Not a fan when I'm under the impression I'm ordering on the healthier side. I was never asked if I wanted a refill on my drink, she had the most fake smile ever (you know the condescending ones you want to slap off someone) and the burger tasted like meat from the local supermarket.

an old co-worker of mine recommended this place to me to try one night. The food was decent, definitely fresh to order. And you can't beat cheap and strong drinks, that's for sure. But alas, the service. Meh. Be prepared to wait. And it can get very noisy, very quickly.

This is what Hollister would be like if it sold food instead of clothes. The vibe is young and energetic but not so much that it made me and my older woman feel uncomfortable. (I don't think she reads these, don't worry) Being horrible Catholics we took advantage of the uncommon non-existent wait on Good Friday, amidst the other bad Catholics. At the expense of our mortal soul, we enjoyed specialty tacos and the lettuce wrap appetizers, along with prompt hospitable service, that set this casual dining experience apart from the Applebees and Chilis of the world. Great food, priced right and with perfect portion sizes. I left satisfied but not feeling as though I just over indulged myself. In fact, we are returning tonight- my older woman is driving us there as I type this.

WAY WAY WAYYYY too over priced. I ordered a quesadilla and it tasted like it came from Taco Bell, and my friends burrito looked even worse than the ones from Taco Bell. My friend asked for a side of sour cream and they charged her $.75 extra without even letting her know first. (The serving of sour cream was literally the size of a quarter. Not even exaggerating. FOR 75 CENTS!!) On top of everything, the waiter was INCREDIBLY rude. He didn't introduce himself, had horrible composure, and he mumbled every single thing that he said to us and gave us an attitude when we asked him to repeat himself. I'm also pretty positive he mumbled nasty things under his breath every time he walked away from our table. It looked like the entire wait staff was very unfriendly and uninterested in working there. I would NOT recommend this place. Save your money, or go to Bubba Burritos in Islip if you want some real delicious Mexican food!

Love Zim Zari! Great food at reasonable prices. Everything I've eaten here is awesome including the pineapple BBQ wings, the jalapeño salsa burger and the fish burrito...oh and the filet mignon tacos are pretty damn good too. The cozy casual atmosphere makes Zim Zari a great place to relax with a good drink and excellent food!

Came for Monday night $5 Margaritas and $5 Burritos. It was okay, food was decent, nothing to write home about, and margaritas were weak. Also, waitress asked if I would like my burrito "zimzari style" which was about 2 tablespoons of salsa and 2 tablespoons of melted cheese on top of the burrito, but she failed to mention that it would augment the price of my burrito by $2. That was kind of obnoxious.

    (3)

Crap food, crap service, the guacamole tasted like defrosted flavorless sludge and the rest of the food was bland and unoriginal.

Zim Zari has quickly become one of my favorite dining spots and overall one of those places I immediately think of when I am unable to decide where to go out to eat. The simple reasons are that the food is excellent, the portions are perfectly sized and the price is just right. It is also one of those cool, dive-y yet modern and contemporary little spots that oozes with charm and uniqueness. Upon walking in on my first visit with my girlfriend, I instantly adored the restaurant. The interior has such a cool vibe to it between the mellow blue lights behind the bar, to the cozy little tables, to the Zim Zari pineapple logo and surfing scenes painted on the wall. They also have a couple of flat screens for sports (placed high up so as not to be distracting). The location is a bit small and the siting is a bit limited but you never feel cramped or squished which is nice. The bar is small and the options are limited (so be aware to those big drinkers out there). They serve mostly Corona, sangria, and tequila drinks with new arrivals coming every so often. However, the ZimZarita (a souped-up margarita) is excellent and the margaritas are very good and the sizes are spot on. The food is what I come back to though. Everything is extremely well-priced and everything is absolutely delicious. The surf and turf tacos are delectable and the bang--bang shrimp tacos are great with just the right amount of spice via the chipotle mayo. I can honestly say that everything I have ordered here was spot-on from the quesadillas to the burritos, and from the fajitas to the zimzaladas (their version of enchiladas). All in all, I'm in love with Zim Zari and I'll be visiting very often and for a while. Saturday nights are hoppin' but never too much so that there is more than a 15-20 minute wait. Plus, they run a bunch of promotions, one of which being $2 taco night on Tuesdays. I'm not talking Taco Bell tacos, I'm talking steak tacos, shrimp and filet mignon tacos, and bang-bang shrimp tacos with chipotle mayo and avocado to name a few. This is casual Mexican food to a whole new level and it is glorious in every sense of the word. Give Zim Zari a try. I mean, you gotta love a restaurant with a surfboard menu (literally!)

I have been going here since they pretty much opened. I really loved this place. Unfortunately the last 2 times were not such good experiences. The food quality seems to be going down and the servers aren't as friendly and attentive as they used to be.

My mom and I were looking to do dinner on Saturday night, we were about to do our normal La Botegga dinner when she suggested we give this place a try. I love Mexican in any way shape or form, so we decided to give it a go The atmosphere is really cute and fun, menu is printed on mini surfboards, but the restaurant was a little chilly for my liking. We ordered the wings 3 ways. These were fantastic, all three flavors were tasty, the wings were cooked good and NICE size, I cold have had this as a meal My mom got the surf and turf tacos which she enjoyed (she is very picky!) They looked tasty and smelled great. I had the fish burrito. I was Sooooo happy with this it was light and fresh and had a delicious crunch from the cabbage slaw, it was slightly dry. I added some of the salsa from the chips and that did the trick. Food on other peoples tables also looked and smelled great, can't wait to eat my way through this menu. Prices are very reasonable and portions are healthy (so slightly less then other places) My only real complaint is the service. Our waiter took forever anytime we needed something like extra chips, drink refills, or out bill. Ill def come back here, but if service is a deal breaker for you, then this might now be your spot.

  • Leslie B.

We ordered take out. The people I was with loved their burritos and eat here once a week. They highly recommended the place. It was not Taco Tuesday. My BBQ Chicken Quesadilla was $8 and difficult to get down. I thought the combination would be good but instead it was soggy and bland. I definitely do not recommend ordering it and immediately wished I hadn't. If I ever go back, I might try something more traditional but I surely will not be excited about it. p.s. As an aside, we called to see if they were still open and no one answered. We decided to drive by just in case and they were in fact open, and not even busy. Not sure why they do not answer their business phone.

Many of the California and/or Mexican themed eateries in Nassau County strike out, but Zim Zari hits it out of the ball park. Fresh food, great and fast service, and an awesome 'surf' themed atmosphere which gives the joint a relaxed feel. I highly recommend the fish tacos. I've ordered them at least a dozen times, and have been completely satisfied each time.

Wasn't impressed. Ordered a burrito and it seemed like they made it the day previous, not fresh at all. Also place seemed dirty. The back hall to the bathrooms had boxes and things on the floor. Don't think I'll be back.

Great fish tacos at a low price. The quantity isn't huge but enough for a lunch. Also a big fan of Taco Tuesday. The surf-and-turf tacos are a fantastic. Also the appetizers are very good. Highly recommend the Upside Down Nachos.

  • Elena D.

This place really let me down! The menu seemed really promising with flavors of wood grilled meats, mangoes, and pineapple it certainly made my mouth water. I was all geared up for some californian/mexican flavor explosion but I was extremely underwhelmed. I ordered the baja chicken burrito and it was nothing but rice with chicken and a thin spread of guacamole. There was no cheese to speak of. The plate looked sad when it came out to the table adorned with a small cup of a questionable looking cole slaw concoction. The tacos were also underwhelming. Perhaps we went on an off night? I can confidently say that I regretted my decision to eat at Zim Zari, and wished that we had just gone to Chipotle instead.

San Diegoish. Surfer bar meets Mexican. Cool atmosphere and quick service in the old Butera's space. Liked the free chunky salsa and chips. Went there last year after the just opened, and the food was great. The prices were good. Not too much elbow room, but a clean, fun, quality type place. I happened to be in the area, although i would not drive too far to dine there, but I would go again if in the area and dont want Taco Bell but dont wont to kill the budget on a full fledged more expensive restaurant. I would suggest you check it out

My fiancee and I go out to Zim Zari pretty much every weekend. The food is delicious, the prices are so incredibly reasonable, the atmopshere is energetic, and the service is consistently great. It's always packed there on the weekend! The crispy fish tacos are soooooooo amazing - I get them every single time because I can't bring myself to order anything else! He loves the volcano shrimp and the fish burrito. The chips they put on the table are salty and crispy and the salsa is delicious. Margaritas are strong and yum!

Ok this place has gotten GREAT reviews (although few) so I must have gone on the wrong night. I am a native San Diegan so when a few friends of mine told me there was an existing Taco Tuesday in Long Island i had to check it out. The place WAS packed. It was a decent size but I wouldn't say big. We had a group of 6 so we had to wait 5-10 minutes with a reservation. We are seated in a booth. 10 minutes later..no drink order. OK whatever there busy...Finally put our order in for the drinks. They came almost another ten minutes later. My drink was mediocre, my bad for ordering a blended marg instead of on the rocks because very little alcyhol. Anywho finish our drink STILL NOT FOOD. OK so the guy comes with some tacos, not even close to our order. After bringing a few different plates that were not ours they finally got the right order. We place another order for drinks. When we are almost done with our food they finally bring our second round of drinks. Well they got the drink order wrong. Someone beside our server brought the drinks so when our server finally made his way to see how we are doing he said " oh thats not the drinks you got huh? sorry." I dont care about a freaking apology how about ANOTHER DRINK or an EXTRA SHOT. Service was bad.. The meat was delicious. Pork was nice and sweet, fish tacos were yummy, and the steak was just as succulent. That aside the rest of the experience kind of sucked. Other then the good meat there was not much else that was going for tacos either. Not much filling but great meat. I feel like it would be good on a different day.

Great California Mexican food, that is cheap! Excellent house margaritas for $3 bucks on Mondays!

The food was good. The atmosphere was fun. I would go back if I were in the area but I wouldn't go out of my way. Nothing exceptional.

Fun place with fresh tasting food and my favorite green habanero hot sauce (yummmm). I've enjoyed it every time I've been there. Taco Tuesday is worth the trip alone. And excellent Guacamole appetizer!

My husband and I come here ALL the time! We get tacos almost every tuesday because how can you pass up amazing tacos at $2 each?!? The food is awesome and there isn't usually a wait. Wednesdays they have buy one get one free fajitas. The atmosphere is casual and the food is great! I highly recommend... well, everything but especially the enchilladas and the edamame!

First time dining here and had a great experience ! The food was fresh and delicious and the service was excellent ! Our server, Janine, made superb suggestions and our orders were brought out faster than you could say " zim zari California grill" We had the filet mignon tacos with a side of truffle fries and the bbq steak burrito. The Maui waui margarita is something you simply cannot pass up ! How could I forget the more than reasonable prices !? This place deserves more than 5 stars !

Wow! I seriously love this place and can't believe I haven't reviewed it yet. I came with my family for my birthday last week. We ordered the upside down nachos. Holy moly. Probably one of the best nacho/bean dips I've ever had. I couldn't stop going back in for more! It was Wednesday which meant half price fajitas, my sister & my dad got steak fajitas and loved them. My boyfriend got filet minion tacos. He ate them SO fast because they were delicious! My mom got the Zim Zari wrap with shrimp instead. She said it was everything she loved in a wrap. I ordered the Shrimp Zimzalada's but because the restaurant was so loud, I had a miscommunication with our server, and they brought out a different shrimp dish. They quickly got the correct dish going in the kitchen. She apologized (it wasn't really her fault, just a miscommunication!) and gave us a free appetizer coupon. The manager also took my meal off the meal which was very nice. Great staff and management but most importantly delicious and consistent food! I can't wait to be back on Long Island to eat here again.
